Rustic Home

Rustic Home

Do you love a rural inspired, homespun interior with a simple vibe?  Do you favour honest materials in natural finishes? If yes, then this is YOUR style! Rustic Home is the slightly more primitive second cousin of the Simple Vintage home style. Although a Rustic Home places less emphasis on original furnishings and more emphasis on the homemade.

Here are a few important principles to follow for the most successful finish.

How to style your house into a

‘Rustic Home’

5 Ways

1) Embrace the Old and Worn.

The Rustic Home style is full of the old and worn. Breathe new life into existing fixtures and fittings rather than replacing them. Sand and wax aged floorboards rather than carpeting. Expose healthy old ceiling joists. Scrub old light shades free from rust and hang centre stage. Lovingly leave a battered chest of drawers in its worn condition to whisper of stories old. In the pics below, an old rusted bath has been smoothed and varnished before being displayed as the prominent feature in the bathroom. A beautifully adorned, worn out tin makes the perfect plant pot for a lavender.

2) Choose Homespun or Handmade

The Rustic Home style favours the homespun and homemade. By honouring sustainable materials and traditional techniques, this style celebrates the Slow Down movement wholeheartedly. Bespoke crafted wooden elements and hand thrown pottery are popular accessories. Local auctions or car boot fares, farmers markets and online cottage businesses are great places to find these hidden gems.

3) Work with Natural Materials

Natural materials are a must-have in a Rustic Home, from the wooden floors to the terracotta tiles and the age old flagstones. It’s an unrivalled treat to inherit these, especially when found by surprise under layers of modern alternatives. Natural materials have an essence that cannot be replicated and whilst not always the cosiest, they make up for this with their history and character. These natural elements breathe charm into a Rustic Home, whether exposed stone walls, age old wooden furnishings or slubby cotton sofa covers.

4) Add Vintage or Industrial Accents

If you are building a Rustic Home from a modern interior or a new build, try adding vintage or industrial accents to build extra character and interest. These details could be anything from an old colander or a vintage draining rack in the kitchen to a repurposed soap dish in the bathroom. These accent pieces will add distinctive and unique highlights to your home.

5) Expose the Details

A Rustic Home trademark feature is the exposed interior details. One of these might be something as simple as an exposed cable on a pendant light fitting (image 1) or as integral as an exposed limed or cemented wall (image 5). The other examples pictured are worn painted timber cupboards, exposed plumbing pipes, and a simple unadorned staircase.
