Modern Eclectic

Mood board 'modern eclectic' style

Modern Eclectic

If you love a contemporary style with an eclectic feel and a licence for out-of-the-box creativity then this is your style.

The ‘Modern Eclectic’ style is characterised by a mostly white backdrop, contemporary pieces of furniture and a mixture of fittings from other genres.

‘Modern Eclectic’ is individual, distinctive and sassy.

Here are a few important principles to follow for the most successful finish.

How to style your home ‘Modern Eclectic’

5 Basic Principles

There are some key features to creating this style but also some common pitfalls. The Modern Eclectic style can have a tendency to feel more austere than cozy so I have added a fail-safe at the end to ensure that your home doesn’t lose its soulful finish.

Here’s how:

1) Start with contemporary furnishings

Start the scheme with any contemporary fittings that you already have, as this will form the underlying feel of the space.

2) Add eclectic features

Adding extra features that clash with the initial contemporary scheme will create an eclectic and interesting feel.

In order to do this use impactful subject matters like botanicals, maps or oversized accessories such as unusual lamps or artwork.

You could also add some items from alternative genres such as traditional or mid-century furnishings and/or vibrant contrasting colours.

3) Add bold brave features

Adding bold and brave features such as unusual light fittings, pops of colour or distinctive patterns into the mix adds another layer of eclecticism.

The aim is to mix together a unique collection of interior items in as much of a cohesive way as possible.

In order to achieve this cohesion, stick to soft off-white walls and choose your clashing items or eclectic furnishings sparingly.

A couple of items of traditional furniture against a contemporary backdrop, a statement light fitting, and a pop of colour should be all you need to set the tone.

4) Add wall collages

This is a very easy and inexpensive way to elevate a simple scheme into a Modern Eclectic one.

Artwork is available to buy in most high street home stores but you can also pick up obscure originals at car boots sales, charity shops and auctions. Be true to yourself and collect only those that you love, no matter how broad the subject matter. In fact, the broader the better.

Choose different frames, different content and different styles, composing them all together on an empty wall.

You might need to play around with the composition on the floor first in order to get a pleasing, balanced affect but this is a really impactful way of making an eclectic statement.

5) Insist on cozy

Statement interiors need balls of steel to pull off but trust in your instincts and try not to compromise.

Focus your research on the features you hope to install and go for it!

For an extra Beatengreen influence on your unique interior don’t forget the cozy.

These styles are fantastic to look at but they sometimes need softening with the right wattage bulbs and lots of extra textiles like rugs, throws and cushions.
